I am a registered psychologist, previously a registered nurse, and have worked with people across the lifespan since the beginning of my career in health more than thirty years ago. Working with people as they transition through the many challenges in life has been a cornerstone of my clinical practice.
Whether you are living in the larger community or a retirement community, you may have challenges that come with moving into the later years. These may include, illness, retirement (forced or by choice), redundancy, separation and divorce, death of a loved one, challenges with family relationships, or return to work for the over 50’s after a period of part-time employment and/or bringing up a family. Our cognition (thinking), memory, needs and perspective may also change as we age. Sometimes memories become more difficult to deal with, causing significant distress.
There are a number of counselling and therapy strategies that can be tailored to your needs. Psycho-education can assist understanding of your particular issues. Narrative and trauma-based therapies can help to ‘soften’ memories, bring us back into the present moment, and refocus us on the positive aspects of life. Innovative techniques such as Emotional Freedom Technique, and other relaxation techniques, can be employed as a part of therapy to support this process. Mindfulness based therapies are also a way of rebalancing the experience of life. These therapies will always be approached gently and at your pace.
The meaning and purpose in your life can be just as rich and full as you age, as can the understanding you carry of the contribution you have made to your family and your community. Your story can be rewritten to focus on your strengths, rebuild your resources, and gain a new perspective as you progress through the later years.
I would be honoured to assist you to explore your goals for today and your life ahead, and work through them together. It is a privilege to be allowed into the lives of others and I have great respect for those who choose to work on their psychological health and well-being to benefit themselves and their family.
