I enjoy working across different age groups. I have a lot of respect and time for the ageing population, the struggles they face and the wisdom that they bring to the wider community. In 2010 as part of my masters degree I completed a placement at the Logan hospital in the Lifestyle Prevention Centre. A majority of my clients there were older people struggling with diabetes, heart disease or making the transition to an aged care facility due to health concerns. This placement helped to me to develop empathy for the ageing population and understand the need for preventative health services such as counselling, family therapy and wellness positive psychology programs to promote healthy ageing and challenge the myth that depression is just part of growing older.
Sexuality and vitality are important areas in everybody’s life and can be increased and maintained as we age. There are so many assumptions ,taboos and stereotypes when it comes to older people and sex. The impact of ageing on sexual function has historically been viewed as an inevitable process of decline that steals from the individual any possibilities of a functional and enjoyable sexuality later in life. However, both science and attitudes towards sex and sexual disorders in later life are evolving. Often with age comes a high level of emotional security, maturity and a heighten capacity for enhanced intimacy as well as less time restrictions. With the baby boom generation about to turn 65, we can expect to see sexuality playing a big and more vital role in the lives of our elders.
As a relationship and sex therapist I am passionate about promoting the positives that ageing brings to life, relationships and sexuality. I will be running different workshops during the year to promote wellness, vitality, exercise ,meditation and sexuality.
