Fairness and equity are the cornerstones of who I am! Idealistically, I believe in a world where everyone is valued for the contribution they have to offer, which is a great goal but difficult to achieve. Our world is rapidly changing and healthcare advances leave us living longer physically but with little being done to ensure our emotional and social well-being.
For over 10 years I have been working with a variety of organisations to understand the factors that impact on us as we grow older and identify the types of social services needed to maintain our satisfaction with life. Family relationships are of particular interest to me. How middle aged adults balance the needs of caring for their children on the one hand and their ageing parents on the other is of great concern as is the perceived unfair sharing of responsibilities by siblings for ageing parents.
Making this situation even more stressful is the competing time commitments of carers engaged in full time employment trying to provide physical, emotional and social support to both younger and older family members. My paradigm of praxis is holistic and systemic dealing with families as systems of interrelationships while dealing with the whole person physically, emotionally and socially. This involves the assessment of the situation and connecting clients into an interdisciplinary field of care in which I provide psychological support.
