What can we learn from Asian culture? Is it true that once you reach beyond 80 you’re branded with social incompetent? destined to be in a nursing house and abandon by the society? Not according to these elders from Taiwan!!
At 2007, an event was created by HONDAO Senior Citizen’s Welfare Foundation (Taiwan) called ” Challenge 80, Beyond thousands of miles – Diary of eternal youth riders around Taiwan”, where elders above age of 70 can apply. The idea is to promote the spirit of “eternal youth”, to change the public perceptions on elders, and encourage other elders to pursue their dreams.
The group composed of 20 elders both male and female with an average age of 80 years old ranging from 70 to 89, and a total age sum of 1500 years old. They have successfully completed a full circled trip around Taiwan with their motorcycles, and took them 13 days nonstop to travel 1179km.
With the passion, fearless courage and promises to keep, they have overcome the problems and difficulties on the trip, and conquered the dangerous motorway and mountain roads despite they have to go through the hospital a couple of times. Despite two of them have cancers, four of them required hearing aids and five of them have hypertensions, none of them gave up themselves to the reality.
Couple years after the event was held, an insurance company also done an advertisement “Dream Rangers” based on their true story. At 2012, an actual documentary movie was finally put together from the event called “Go Grandriders” with the slogan of “When you are finally reach 80 years old, how much more courage you have to dream?”
Now here is the question…. How much courage do you have when you’re 80?
