As the old saying goes ‘A stitch in time saves nine’, a little preparation now to fix a small problem can prevent a larger problem developing later.
Can Dementia be prevented if treated? Should you bother to find out?
We interviewed one of our most experienced psychologists Paul Carver about the importance of the early detection of Dementia. Paul explained that many people don’t talk about old age and may be uneducated or in denial about the warning signs of Dementia and how to deal with it if it does manifest. Early detection means there is a large range of options to prevent further deterioration. Paul Carver has found in his research that the effects of Dementia can be significantly held off if diagnosed early and save many years of unnecessary distress and medical treatment. Education, support and treatment can be provided to the sufferer and their family to help them understand and manage issues such as memory loss, communication and ability to focus. Early detection helps maintain a better quality of life, improves opportunity for social participation and enables those with Dementia symptoms to take an active role in decision making and planning for the future. Taking a passive role can unnecessarily lead to an earlier progression of the disease in many people.
After chatting to Paul Carver it became quite clear that avoiding knowing about this disease was causing so much unnecessary distress.
